Castaway Cay - Disney-owned private island in the Bahamas
If you are booked on a Disney cruise, you will surely put an end to Castaway Cay, Disney on its own piece of paradise in the Bahamas. Your day on shore is certainly sure to be a highlight of your trip, as Disney had done everything possible to transform this island into a relaxing getaway for you and your family.
History
The Bahamas was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his first trip. He called the "Baja Mar", which means little or Wednesday, and the name has remained to this day. The British arrived in the 1600s after the Spaniards had left in search of gold, and many British fleeing the American Revolution settled here, as well as South during the Civil War. The Bahamas became an independent member of the British Commonwealth in 1973.
Disney bought the island - formerly known as Gorda Cay - in the 1990s, and spent more than $ 25 million fixing it, including dredging the port so that large cruise ships Disney could directly on the dock for the island without a tender.
